notwithstanding = despite, 「~에도 불구하고」. 앞에도 뒤에도 올 수 있지만, 우리가 확인한 GRE 문장완성 아홉 문장에서는 전부 명사 뒤였습니다. 사전도 「흔히 목적어 뒤에 쓴다」고 적습니다.
despite the rain = the rain notwithstanding
→ 둘 다 「비에도 불구하고」. 명사 뒤에 있어도 똑같이 읽습니다.
쪼개 보면 not + withstanding, 「막아서지 않는」(라틴어 non obstante 「방해가 되지 않고」의 번역 차용)입니다. 그래서 명사 뒤의 notwithstanding은 그 명사가 막아서지 못했다는 뜻입니다.
